About Caroline Poland, MA, LMHC, LCAC, CCTP, CCFP, NCC
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Licensed Clinical Addictions Counselor, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, Certified Compassion Fatigue Professional, and Nationally Certified Counselor. I am also Certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy. EMDR is a type of therapy that is specifically designed for those who experience distress around traumatic memories and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and find that their life is adversely impacted by the trauma that they have experienced.
I believe that counseling is a collaborative process, and my goal is to journey alongside you as we work together to discover new insights, define and meet your goals, and find healing. As I walk with clients through this collaborative process, I don’t force people to use an intervention or a specific technique. I believe that through curiosity and observation, we will be able to determine what works best for you as you move towards healing! To that end, I offer many options and techniques, and you are invited to discover what works best for you!
Through the counseling process, I have found that the integration of both mind and body provides deep healing and transformation. I use a variety of theories and techniques including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Attachment Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and working with the body and nervous system - among others. I believe in integrating curiosity, compassion, and creativity into the therapeutic process, while also integrating pillars and principles of trauma-informed care and relationships.
I am the past director of a University Counseling Center and was also a faculty member of that University.
A significant portion of my post-graduate training and a focus of my continuing education has been on the effects of and treatment of anxiety and trauma. Following graduate school, I discovered a passion for working with those who are experiencing anxiety and trauma, and have therefore immersed myself in deep study of this area to ensure that I can provide the highest standard of trauma-informed care. I believe that trauma impacts all of us, whether we identify it or not. Trauma isn’t so much about a defined event as it is about our nervous system’s response to that event. When working with trauma experiences, I don’t believe that it’s helpful to just talk over and over about the event itself (that can actually be re-traumatizing), rather I believe that we have to work with the body and with the nervous system as we address trauma. I’ve found that this can be very empowering to the individual! If you’d like to know more about a type of trauma therapy I use (EMDR), click here!
